Position Summary

Repairs and maintains Authority owned and operated vehicles including: light, medium and heavy duty bus and truck vehicles, automobiles, mobile operating equipment and associated operating components that include, but are not limited to: diesel engines, automatic transmissions, air brake systems and suspension steering.

Qualifications

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Inspects, repairs and maintains mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic units and components.
  • Disassembles, adjusts, overhauls, reassembles and replaces units and components.
  • Cleans units and parts using various cleaning solvents and solutions.
  • Utilizes a variety of hand and power operated tools to perform repair work and test equipment and gauges to determine proper tolerances and specifications.
  • Analyzes inspection findings to determine vehicle component and part malfunctions.
  • Assists in the instruction of apprentices and other personnel.
  • Operates Authority vehicles in and around shop area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Required to have successfully progressed through the Bus & Truck Mechanic Apprentice program, or have served required tenure in each position of the job family; or possess a minimum of five years verifiable work experience in a recognized heavy-duty diesel truck or bus repair shop(s); or have related work experience and a certificate/diploma in automotive repair from an accredited trade school or college.
  • Must be classified as a full-time member of Auto Mechanics Local 701.
  • Required to submit to and pass drug and alcohol testing as mandated by the Federal Transportation Administration.
  • Required to have or obtain a valid State of Illinois CDL drivers license with the required P endorsement and B classification.
  • Must supply certain hand tools.
  • Must pass a physical examination.

Physical Requirements

  • Required to be standing while operating hydraulic press, walking to, from and within work area and sitting at welding table to weld small parts.
  • Required to lift raw materials, (up to 50 lbs.), carrying sheets of steel, converter housings, pushing and pulling welding machine, torch cart and air hose.
  • Required to climb ladders, pit stairs, scaffolding and balancing.
  • Required to stoop to repair bus floors and to retrieve broken parts required to kneel, crouch and craw to repair underneath bus.
  • Required to reach to retrieve radiance rods, small work tools and to hand burning or cutting torch, hammers, goggles and helmets.
  • Required to feel surface of a piece to be welded or to inspect parts for wear.
  • Required to talk to and hear co-workers while performing teamwork jobs, giving instruction and observing surface prior to repair.
  • Required to see near and far to read blueprints and schematic drawings, while doing lay-out work, to observe surface prior to repair and to see dangerous situations in shop area and color vision while examining welding jobs.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Required to possess a comprehensible knowledge of heavy-duty diesel engines, automatic transmissions, airbrakes, steering and drivelines utilized by the Authority.
  • Required to be knowledgeable of acceptable methods and shop procedures utilized in the repair and analysis of heavy-duty bus and truck propulsion, braking and steering systems.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of the hand tools, mechanic tools, test equipment, and gauges utilized in the repair of heavy-duty diesel engines, transmissions, air conditioning systems, steering systems, air brake systems and various other vehicle components.
  • Must possess a basic understanding of the theory of electronics/electricity.
  • Must possess the knowledge necessary to read and understand wiring diagrams.
  • Required to possess an understanding of basic electrical circuitry and wiring.
  • Must be familiar with the use of digital volt ohmmeters and able to measure voltage and resistance using a digital volt ohmmeter.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the basic theory, operation and repair of air conditioning systems.
  • Must be aware of and understand the importance of environmental safety as it pertains to the use of refrigerant gases.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the theory, operation and repair of heavy-duty s cam and wedge air brake systems.
  • Required to be knowledgeable of mathematics as it relates to the duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Must possess the skills and knowledge necessary in the performance of causative analyses of diesel engine and component malfunctions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Required to bring in buses to be worked on or to remove parts.
  • Required to work under extreme cold outside on repairing buses during winter months.
  • Required to work under extreme heat during summer months.
  • Required to work in wet and humid conditions with pneumatic tools and noise vibration from running engines.
  • Required to work with mechanical moving parts of engines, certain tools, electrical equipment and burns welding equipment; hot engine and parts; hot oil and water.
  • Required to work with explosive and chemical cleaning solvents and solutions. Works from ladders.
  • Required to work under atmospheric conditions where fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases from running engines, torch and welding fumes and diesel oil exist. Works from brake linings parts with equipment when cleaning parts, acetylene torches and Freon.
  • Must obtain fort lift certification through CTAs Training Department.

  • Small and large hand and power tools.
