Job Summary

The Director, Genetic Counseling Program is responsible for all aspects of program oversight to ensure educational success and fiscal stability. The Program Director maintains compliance with university and accreditation standards, manages the program's organization, administration, fiscal budget, and conducts ongoing review and analysis of planning, assessment, and development. Responsibilities also include academic advising, monitoring, evaluating, and remediating student performance, as well as teaching and involvement in admissions.

Department Description

The Institute for Human Genetics (IHG) at UCSF, an Organized Research Unit in the School of Medicine, serves as a hub for genetics/genomics research, education, and industry partnerships, comprising 97 faculty members across four schools.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in genetic counseling from an ABGC-accredited program
  • Board Certified by ABGC
  • Valid Genetic Counselor License in California
  • Current AHA BLS certification
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a certified genetic counselor, with at least 3 in a patient-facing role
  • Experience as a course instructor for at least six credit hours of postsecondary education
  • Annual continuing education in curriculum, assessment, evaluation, or educational pedagogy, including diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • For first-time program directors: completion of at least 10 hours of related training in the last 10 years and precepting at least five graduate students for 500 hours in the last 10 years
  • Availability for program administration year-round

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong organizational, management, and customer service skills
  • Knowledge of clinical, technical, and operational aspects of genetic counseling
  • Ability to evaluate and report on student and faculty performance and participate in decision-making
  • Excellent critical-thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills

License/Certification

  • ABGC Certification
  • California Genetic Counselor License
  • AHA BLS certification

Additional Information

Salary range: $59.14 - $90.22/hour. The final salary depends on experience and internal equity. Benefits information is available at UC Benefits .
