The Executive Director of Hawai‘i Children’s Action Network (HCAN) is an experienced community leader with proven policy advocacy expertise, a strong record of building community partnerships and influencing legislative change, and a deep, demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and social justice for children and families.

Position Overview

HCAN is an independent, nonpartisan nonprofit composed of two entities, a 501(c)(3) and a 501(c)(4), dedicated to improving the lives of Hawai‘i’s children through policy change, community engagement, and grassroots organizing. HCAN is seeking an experienced Executive Director to lead its statewide advocacy efforts, guide policy and legislative strategies, foster deep connections with diverse communities, secure sustainable funding, and manage a dedicated team committed to advancing family-focused public policies and programs.

The Executive Director will guide the vision, strategy, and operations of both HCAN entities, advancing statewide impact in education, health, and economic security for Hawai‘i’s children and families. This position calls for a dynamic, equity-driven leader with deep Hawai‘i relationships and proven expertise in nonprofit management, legislative advocacy, fundraising, and coalition-building. The ideal candidate brings 7–10+ years of senior leadership experience, excels at building partnerships with policymakers, funders, and community leaders, and communicates with clarity and influence. Success in this role requires strategic thinking, adaptability, and the ability to lead effectively in a fast-paced, evolving policy environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the organization’s strategic direction, programs, and fiscal management in partnership with the Board.
  • Build relationships with policymakers, funders, community leaders, and partners to advance HCAN’s mission.
  • Oversee fundraising, grant writing, and donor engagement to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Serve as the organization’s public spokesperson and represent HCAN in media, legislative, and community forums.
  • Guide program and policy development, including grassroots organizing and advocacy campaigns.
  • Recruit, manage, and develop a high-performing staff team.

  • Deep connections to Hawai‘i’s diverse communities and understanding of local systems.
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
