Head of Archives and Special Collections Georgia Institute of Technology Job Location: Georgia Apply By: April 21, 2025 Date Created: 03/27/2025 Job Summary The Georgia Tech Library seeks a Head of Archives and Special Collections to oversee archives operations within the Archives, Records Management, and Digital Curation department. This individual will be responsible for supervising the daily activities of the Archives and Special Collections unit, ensuring the proper care and management of archival materials, and providing leadership to a team of archivists. Working closely with the Assistant Dean of Archives, Records Management, and Digital Curation, the Archives Manager will help develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures related to archival management, preservation, and accessibility. This position will report to the Assistant Dean of Archives, Records Management, and Digital Curation. While remote work is possible, this position is primarily in person at least 3 days a week. Responsibilities 50% Administrative Develop and implement strategies, policies, and procedures for preserving, describing, and discovery of special collections and university archives, based on the highest standards of professional practice and collaboration with colleagues. Supervise the archival faculty and staff positions within the Archives unit, ensuring effective operations and adherence to departmental goals. Responsible for effective faculty and staff management, including hiring and onboarding, training and development, performance management, and promotion processes. Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Archives, Records Management, and Digital Curation and Library leadership to set a vision for the department and conduct outreach activities that promote the vision to stakeholders including donors, faculty, staff, and students. In collaboration with Library leadership, support the Assistant Dean of Archives, Records Management, and Digital Curation to establish and steward relationships with current and prospective donors, including alumni and campus partners. Collaborate with the Digital Curation team to develop strategies for digitizing archival materials and maintaining digital collections. Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards for archival preservation. Coordinate outreach and educational programs to engage stakeholders with archival materials. Work with the Assistant Dean of Archives, Records Management, and Digital Curation to purchase collections and related technologies spending, as appropriate. Other administrative duties as assigned or necessary. Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Archives, Records Management, and Digital Curation on conservation of records, books, and manuscripts for the Library as appropriate and as needed in both normal and emergency situations. Oversee the services and curatorial areas within the unit and work with the service owners and curators to preserve and promote the university archives and special collections. Oversee the acquisition, organization, preservation, and accessibility of archival and special collections materials. May participate in collection processing, instruction, and other day-to-day archival duties as necessary. Other duties as assigned. 10% Scholarship and Creative Endeavors According to expectations for library faculty members, contribute professionally through research, scholarship, and creative activities. 10% Service to the Library, Institute and Archival Profession Foster positive relations with faculty, students, and staff. Serve on library and university committees as assigned. Contribute to the profession through service to professional organizations at the local, state, regional, and national levels, as appropriate. All members of the Georgia Tech Library Faculty have an effort distribution based on their role. The distribution for this faculty role is 50% administration, 30% archivist, 10% scholarship and creative endeavors, and 10% professional service. Required Qualifications This position vacancy will be filled at the rank of Archivist II, Archivist III, or Archivist IV. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Non-tenure Track Academic Faculty ranks as outlined in section 3.2.2 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook ( Archivist II Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) – accredited master’s degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization. Evidence of scholarship and/or evidence of service to the librarian profession. 5 years of professional experience. Archivist III Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) – accredited master’s degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization. A strong record of scholarship and service demonstrating significant contributions to the librarian/archivist profession. 10 years of professional experience. Archivist IV Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) – accredited master’s degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization. A strong record of scholarship and service demonstrating the highest standards of professional contributions to the librarian profession and are recognized widely by peers. 15 years of professional experience. Preferred Qualifications 2-3 years experience supervising faculty, staff, and/or student assistants in an academic archive. 5 years experience with arranging, describing, and providing access to physical and/or digital collections. 5 years experience with Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Dublin Core, Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), METS, PREMIS, and other related archival descriptive standards. 5 years experience with preservation, collection, management, and security practices related to the care of archives and special collections materials. 2-3 years experience with Aeon and ArchivesSpace. 1-2 years experience assisting with donor relations and the acquisition of collections. The ability to perform physical activities associated with the archival environment. Proposed Salary This is a benefits-eligible position with a salary range of $75,323-108,304, plus an administrative stipend, commensurate with education and experience.
