Job Description

Work LocationNew York Expected durationThis internship is for a minimum 3 and maximum of 4 months and designed to be in-person and full-time. The duration and modality may be adjusted on request of the successful candidate. Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe intern shall support the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented. Daily responsibilities with the Peace Missions Support Section include, but are not limited to: research, identify and analyze international human rights trends in the area of peace and security, policies, initiatives and/or legislation at the United Nations, assessing their impact on peace operations and preparing documents and written summaries as agreed in each case; provide remote support to the organisation of virtual workshops, member state briefings, meetings with non-governmental organisations and other meetings or events as required; support the gathering of best practices, statistics and other data related to human rights; support human rights officers on specific priority countries, and as such, take notes at relevant meetings; assist in drafting and editing various documents, reports, position papers, statements, talking points, presentations and outreach materials; attend relevant virtual meetings as required; and perform other related duties requested by supervisor, as appropriate. The internship is located at the New York Office of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The selected intern will be part of the Peace Missions Support Section (PMSS) and will report to the Team Leader Strategic Planning Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship programme applicants must, at the time of their submission, be enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree); be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or have completed an aforementioned academic degree, preferably in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field, AND, if selected, must commence the internship on the date indicated on the acceptance letter. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Ability to do substantive research and to prepare analytical papers, notes, and other relevant communications. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
