Position Information
The Parks and Urban Forestry Manager oversees the maintenance and development of the City's parks, recreation areas, and urban forest, including trees in public spaces and rights-of-way. This role involves managing staff, developing budgets, responding to public inquiries, and coordinating projects. They also play a key part in urban planning, ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of the urban forest.

Essential Job Duties


  1. Leads and supervises staff involved in park maintenance, landscaping, and urban forestry operations.
  2. Oversees and directs the work of parks and urban forestry staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
  3. Develops and manages the division's budget, monitoring expenses, and ensures efficient resource allocation.
  4. Plans and coordinates construction projects, including landscaping, tree planting, and other park improvements.
  5. Develops and implements strategies for the care, protection, and enhancement of trees and vegetation in public spaces.
  6. Responds to public inquiries, addressing concerns, and fostering positive relationships with residents and stakeholders.
  7. Serves as a liaison with community groups, commissions, and other stakeholders.
  8. Develops goals, work plans, and policies for the Parks and Urban Forestry division.
  9. Provides expert advice on tree selection, planting, maintenance, and pest/disease management.
  10. Oversees contracts for services related to park maintenance, landscaping, and urban forestry projects.
  11. Ensures the safety of public spaces by addressing hazards, conducting inspections, and implementing safety procedures.
  12. Ensures compliance with relevant regulations, policies, and best practices related to urban forestry and park management.
  13. Performs other duties of a similar nature as needed by the department.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, landscape maintenance, urban forestry, parks and recreation, or related field AND 5-7 years of parks management experience OR a combination of education, training and experience which would provide the required skills, knowledge and ability to perform the job as determined by the department.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • First Aid/CPR/AED (preferred)
  • Certified Arborist (preferred)
  • Pesticide Certification (preferred)
  • Playground Safety Inspector Certification (preferred)

  • Adept at prioritizing and assigning work to ensure efficient operations.
  • Is skilled in managing department operations to meet established goals and objectives.
  • Ability to apply local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations is a vital skill for this role.
  • Can analyze complex problems and present effective solutions to address challenges in urban forestry and park management.
  • Ability to design, organize, and implement programs related to parks and urban forestry is a key skill.
  • Skilled in preparing and recommending regulations to improve urban forestry practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for interacting with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, and others, to exchange information effectively and receive work direction.
