Overview Genentech’s Ophthalmology and Immunology (OPTI) Department is seeking a translational scientist to lead a research group focused on age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The successful candidate will provide scientific leadership to advance our understanding of disease pathogenesis with a focus on targetable biology and the translation of these insights into transformative therapies. Prior demonstrable leadership and expertise in retinal immune mechanisms and inflammatory pathways will be strongly preferred. This role represents a unique opportunity to build on the Ophthalmology research at Genentech and drive innovation especially at the intersection of immunology, neuroinflammation, and vision science. As Group Lead, you will be responsible for leading a team of scientists, guiding research strategy, and fostering collaborations across Genentech’s discovery, development, and translational ecosystems. You will also represent Genentech externally as a thought leader. Responsibilities Lead and define research programs into pathogenesis of AMD Identify, evaluate, and validate therapeutic targets using Multi-omics (genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic) integration Advanced in vitro and in vivo disease models Partner with cross-functional teams (biology, chemistry, translational medicine, clinical) to advance programs from discovery through preclinical development. Mentor and lead a team of scientists, fostering a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and scientific excellence. Shape and drive strategic Ophthalmology portfolio decisions Represent Genentech through high-impact publications, conference presentations, and participation in scientific networks. Who You Are PhD in Immunology, Neuroscience, Ophthalmology, or related field, complemented by postdoctoral training or 4+ years recent equivalent experience in academia, biotechnology and/or pharma. Recognized expertise in AMD pathogenesis with a track record of innovation as evidenced from postdoctoral work or industry experience. Preferred Qualifications Prior work on retinal immunology, inflammation, or neuroinflammation strongly preferred, as evidenced by high-impact publication history or portfolio outputs. Experience in translational research, linking mechanistic insights to therapeutic strategies. Demonstrated success in target identification, validation, and mechanistic studies in complex disease settings would be a plus. Proven leadership of scientific teams and cross-functional collaborations. Outstanding record of scientific publications, patents, or external recognition in the field. Relocation benefits are available for this job posting. The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $143,200 to $265,900. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
