We are seeking a qualified and compassionate Remote Sign Language Interpreter to provide virtual interpreting services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students across K12 educational settings in Ohio . This fully remote role supports student success by ensuring real-time access to instruction and school communication using American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication modalities as needed.
Provide live ASL interpretation during virtual classroom instruction, small group sessions, individual student meetings, and school-wide events.
Interpret expressively and receptively between ASL and spoken English, ensuring accuracy, tone, and context.
Support students in compliance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans .
Collaborate with general education teachers, intervention specialists, speech-language pathologists, and other service providers.
Prepare for assignments by reviewing lesson plans and participating in virtual planning or IEP meetings as needed.
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and district policies.
Promote awareness of Deaf culture and assist staff in implementing inclusive communication practices.
Assist with or troubleshoot assistive technology tools , including video relay and captioning software.
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
Certification meeting Ohio Department of Education (ODE) requirements, including one of the following:
EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) score of 3.5 or higher
RID Certification (NIC, CI/CT, or CDI)
BEI Certification
High school diploma or GED (Associate or Bachelors degree preferred)
At least 1 year of experience working with school-age children in an educational or related setting
Reliable internet and a private, quiet workspace for remote interpreting
Experience using virtual platforms (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams)
Familiarity with the IEP process , education law, and student accommodations
Understanding of Deaf culture , inclusive instructional strategies, and accessibility tools
Background in K12 virtual or in-person education environments
High-speed internet connection
Modern computer or laptop with webcam and microphone
Comfort using video relay software and secure online learning systems
Willingness to learn district-approved virtual tools and maintain cybersecurity compliance
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Adaptability to various learning styles and interpreting environments
Cultural sensitivity to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community
Time management and self-directed organization
