LAST UPDATED 07/14/2023 JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for providing for a safe and secure school environment, fostering an optimal learning environment and acting as a deterrent to unsafe or poor behavior by patrolling the campus, monitoring student behavior, enforcing school and District policies, intervening in physical encounters, monitoring security cameras, monitoring visitors, reporting unsafe or unhealthy conditions and assisting administrators and/or public officials with emergency or investigative situations. May require varying work hours and days including evenings and weekends. This is a district wide assignment; incumbents will be hired by the District Security Department and assigned to specific site locations but may be re-located at the discretion of the district in order to meet operational effectiveness and needs. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : The following tasks describe the basic functions of the job and represent the type of work performed. They do not constitute an exhaustive list of the duties and responsibilities performed on the job. The following frequencies and percentage of time spent are approximations only and are subject to flexibility dependent on organizational needs. Maintain the safety and security of the students and campus, foster an optimal learning environment and act as a deterrent to unsafe or poor behavior by providing high visibility throughout the school; walking and surveying hallways, common areas, grounds, and parking lots; intervening in verbal and physical encounters among the students; diffusing hostile situations; and enforcing safe school policies regarding weapons, tobacco, illegal substances, traffic rules, dress code, etc. Assist visitors and check for visitor passes. [Daily, 30%] Monitor students during lunch hour inside and outside of the building and during off hours. [Daily, 25%] May assist site administrators in the investigation of illegal activity within the school by use of security cameras and performing dangerous substance, weapons, and drug searches. Assist staff and students during crisis situations. [Daily, 20%] Discuss/mediate infractions with students, provide written accounts of unacceptable behavior/incidents to administrators and assist with assignment of disciplinary measures as necessary. Report unsafe conditions and potential health and safety hazards to administrators. [Daily, 10%] May assist with the supervision of students in study hall, in-school suspension, and/or before/after school after-school detention. [Daily, 5%] May provide security at sporting events and/or other extracurricular activities outside of school hours including, weekends, evenings, and occasional nights. [Weekly, 5%] Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. [Daily, 5%] MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : The minimum amounts of formal education, professional work experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities that must be met for a candidate to be considered for a position. High school diploma or equivalent. Security, law enforcement, or military experience. Minimum age of 21 years old. Attired in appropriate uniform as designated by the Director of Safety and Security. Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality. Racially conscious and culturally competent with the skill, will, capacity, and knowledge to commit to a culture of continuous improvement. Basic knowledge of typical office equipment such as telephones, copiers, fax machines, email, etc. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and various software applications. Basic knowledge of common radio communication procedures. Basic organizational skills. Basic interpersonal relations skills. Basic public relations skills. Intermediate verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly in a timely manner, using professional demeanor and radio etiquette. Ability to work alone and collaboratively in a high stress environment using professional manners, following direction and keeping safety at the forefront of every interaction. Ability to interact with other employees professionally. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job to include HIPAA, HITECH, FERPA, other medical information, and student accommodations. Ability to work in a collaborative environment and interact positively and constructively with supervisors, staff members, students, the community, other District stakeholders, and first responders. Ability to display a priority on student safety and customer service to all customers. Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator. Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire. MINIMUM CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : The minimum certifications and licenses that must be met, valid, and unexpired for a candidate to be considered for a position. Colorado driver’s license and motor vehicle insurance. CPR/First Aid certification within one year after hire. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification within one year after hire. FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) 100 certification within 6 months after hire. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS : Any job-related formal education, professional work experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, certifications, licenses, and other criteria that are inessential and in addition to the minimum qualifications, certifications, and licenses. Associate’s degree. Experience working in a public school district. Experience with emergency response. Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. CPR/First Aid certification. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification. FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) 100 certification. Bilingual (English and additional language). Basic knowledge of Raptor Visitor Management. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS : The physical exertion, cognitive capacities, and work environments required to perform a position’s duties and responsibilities. Must pass a pre-employment physical, which includes jogging, weight lifting, and endurance. Extremely heavy physical effort (lifting over 50 pounds). Prolonged standing/walking. Frequent bending, reaching, squatting, and climbing. Frequent lifting, pulling, and pushing. Speaking and hearing. Close, distance, color, and peripheral vision. Rapid reaction to physical changes (e.g., operating equipment, climbing stairs and ladders, and driving vehicles). May work outdoors and in any existing weather conditions. May work evenings, weekends, and special events. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule at varying locations, including shift work. Mandatory frequent training as determined by the Director of Safety and Security. Overtime work hours are available for various assignments. Usually a noisy environment.
