The GraphQL Platform team is at the forefront of that technology transition, through building foundational patterns and systems for Federated GraphQL API design, data orchestration, and application architecture. The team delivers the GraphQL client and service best practices, tier-0 runtime, tools, and architecture support necessary for teams across Wayfair to build exceptional clients, services, and systems. What You Will Do:

  • Be a visionary leader providing guidance and mentorship to your team and across the organization on GraphQL in a distributed system, and best practices
  • Motivate and influence teams to buy into team vision and quarterly roadmap, pushing individuals outside of their comfort zones where necessary
  • Drive high-impact architectural solutions and hands-on development, including inception, design, execution, and delivery following good design and coding practices
  • Flex your strength and knowledge of GraphQL in a distributed system, DevOps, service development, and support.
  • Define and ensure services are built to industry best practices, including observability, architectural patterns, and inter-team dependency mechanisms (like SLOs)
  • Architect and write code to implement high-quality, scalable, future-proof platform that will have effective system boundaries and will support long-term vision & strategy
  • Participate in technical debates within and across teams to help come to durable documented conclusions
  • Obsessively focus on production readiness for the team including testing, monitoring, deployment, documentation, and proactive troubleshooting
  • Identify risks and gaps in technical approaches and propose solutions to meet the team’s technical vision
  • Work closely with product managers, designers, and peer engineering teams to define project requirements and execution plans
  • Provide visibility into team results and bottlenecks, and drive data-driven action plans
  • Work within an Agile culture to foster continuous improvement at the team and departmental level
  • Be a multiplier, mentor other engineers on the team to improve standards and reduce defects in dynamic environments

What You'll Need:

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering, with a preference for candidates with a mix of start-up and large-company experience.
  • eComm domain expertise is a bonus
  • 3+ years of deep Federated GraphQL experience is required
  • Hands-on experience delivering software within high-growth environments at scale
  • Mastery in cross-functional consensus building and influencing without given authority
  • Experienced in designing and building large-scale, cloud-based systems across various projects
  • Successful background in designing production systems at scale including fault tolerance, reliability, performance, and security
  • Experience operating distributed services at scale, including familiarity with observability tools, logging techniques, troubleshooting, and incident response.
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated experience driving solutions forward and ability to influence results
  • Expertise with a modern programming language (such as TypeScript, Rust, Java, or others).
  • Experience with one or more common open source platforms, tools and framework, eg: GraphQL, Node.js, React, Java microservices, Kafka, Kubernetes, etc.
  • Experience leveraging monitoring and logging technologies (e.g. DataDog).
  • Experience leading/supervising and/or mentoring engineers, leading code reviews, and

The salary range for this position is $207,000 to $230,000/year however, base pay offered may vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package in addition to a full range of medical, financial and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
