This posting is for an Urban and Regional Planning Intern II/III in the Department of Community Revitalization. It is a paid internship. Note: In addition to pay, we can work with the student selected if they should also need academic credit either as a requirement to graduate and or as an elective.

Essential Duties

Intern II/III: This internship is for a current college graduate student or a well-qualified undergraduate student. The h iring selection and level is dependent on the qualification of the successful applicant and the needs of the County for this position .

This is for spring and summer 2025, with the ability to extend further if funding is available. The internship will start mid-January depending on the availability of the student.



Preferred Program/Area of Study : Urban and Regional Planning, Public Administration, Urban Studies, or a related field.

Desired GPA : 3.0

Work Hours : 8:00 am - 4:30 pm are core hours. Internship hours may vary. Interns could be scheduled to work up to 29 hours per week based on the assignment and the intern's availability. All internships are limited to a maximum of 29 hours per week. Assignments may involve small amounts of working outdoors in adverse conditions and temperatures. Generally, anticipate 20 - 25 hours per week during the academic year and 25-29 hours per week in summer.

Work Location: 4905 Dickens Road, Suite 200, Henrico, VA.

Expected Start Date : On or around January 21, 2025.



Expected End Date : Approximately June 1, 2025. Internship could continue through summer 2025 depending on departmental needs, funding availability, student performance and availability of selected student.

Internship Status: This is a paid internship at the hourly rate of $17.00 for graduate students and $16.00 for undergraduate level students.

This internship position will be assigned to the Department of Community Revitalization. The Intern duties may include Assisting with the:
  • Preparation of the Five-Year Consolidated Community Development Plan, including research, demographic and housing data analysis, mapping data, writing report sections, developing presentations and outreach materials, and assisting with community meetings.
  • Administration of locally and federally funded programs involving business assistance, housing, homelessness assistance, and public services, which may include some or all of the following tasks:
    • Developing and maintaining databases of information related to assigned programs.
    • Reviewing grant applications and conducting research to inform funding decisions.
    • Reviewing and modifying procedures and program documents guiding the administration of grant programs.
    • Assisting with monitoring and evaluation of programs administered by partner agencies.
    • Undertaking and documenting land use surveys and other field work to facilitate program design and modification.
    • Developing summary reports highlighting program accomplishments.
    • Tracking and analyzing program accomplishments and preparing summary reports.
    • Preparation of maps and other graphics for reports, presentations, and informational brochures.
  • Collaborating and working with other interns and staff on various projects and programs.
  • Use of GIS and other tools for data analysis, mapping, and presentation graphics.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

The selected student should have knowledge of planning and economic development principles and the ability to read and interpret plans and regulatory requirements. In addition, proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel, PowerPoint and Word is necessary. Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities include proficiency with ArcGIS Online for mapping and data analysis and excellent analytical skills.

The p osition requires the ability to research and work with demographic, housing and land use data, with the ability to manipulate data sets in excel and map data in ArcGIS for analysis and presentation purposes.

Internships are intended to provide the intern with basic experiential exposure to a field of interest. The intern must bring a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced, professional environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the internship having gained basic to sophisticated experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Pursuing a graduate (master's) degree or undergraduate degree in a field relevant to internship; GPA of 3.0 or better;

Experience : Enrolled in a college-level program in relevant degree program; relevant job, volunteer or previous internship experience;

Or: Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to the internship.

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail in all aspects of work.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with demonstrated proficiency in common software products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ArcGIS Pro). Demonstrated GIS mapping and data analysis is preferred
  • Ability to multitask, manage priorities, and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to apply the above skills in working with demographic, housing, economic, and land use data

Interns are not entitled to a permanent position at the completion of an internship. The internship is designed to benefit the intern with the knowledge and skills gained through experiences provided during the course of the internship.
