Job Title: Research Technologist – Biomedical Engineer

Location: Manstein Laboratory, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA

Employment Type: Full-Time

Education Required: Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering or related field

Experience Required: Minimum 1 year of hands-on laboratory experience

Position Summary: The Manstein Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Biomedical Engineer to join our interdisciplinary team as a Research Technologist. This position supports an industry-collaborative research project focused on evaluating skin cosmetic products using a novel Dynamic Contrast Optical Coherence Tomography (dmOCT) system. The study involves imaging and analysis of treated skin samples, using both advanced imaging and traditional histological techniques.

The candidate will work closely with a senior biomedical engineer and a physician-scientist to execute experimental work aimed at advancing non-invasive imaging applications in dermatological research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute a wide range of microscopy experiments, including:
  • Preparation, treatment, and maintenance of ex vivo skin samples
  • Histological staining and immunohistochemistry
  • dmOCT imaging and analysis
  • Conduct advanced image analysis and segmentation using software such as ImageJ, MATLAB, or Python-based tools
  • Develop and refine experimental protocols and imaging assays to optimize data acquisition and reproducibility
  • Perform quantitative analysis of imaging and histological data; generate high-quality figures for internal reports, publications, and presentations
  • Maintain meticulous laboratory records, including protocols, imaging metadata, and experimental results
  • Contribute to manuscript writing and presentations for both academic and industry stakeholders

Required Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong foundation in optics, microscopy, and advanced imaging techniques , particularly OCT or related modalities
  • Hands-on experience with standard laboratory equipment (e.g., microscopes, incubators, cryostats)
  • Ability to perform image processing, quantitative data analysis, and data visualization
  • Experience with data analysis software (e.g., MATLAB, Python, ImageJ, or equivalent)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to contribute to scientific discussions and presentations

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a closely related discipline
  • Minimum of 1 year of laboratory experience in a research setting; industry or academic experience with imaging systems preferred
  • Experience in dermatology, tissue imaging, or skin biology is a plus

Preferred Experience (not required):

  • Familiarity with OCT systems, particularly dmOCT
  • Experience in developing or validating imaging-based assays for tissue evaluation
